Anna Halprin (1920-2021)

Anna Halprin is an American dance icon, who helped pioneer postmodern dance. Defying traditional notions of dance, Anna extended its boundaries to address social issues, build community, foster both physical and emotional healing, and connect people to nature.

An early pioneer in the use of expressive arts for healing, she co-founded the Tamalpa Institute. Anna’s performances moved out of the theater and into the community. An ongoing community effort is her Planetary Dance, promoting peace among people and peace with the earth.

I was a long time student of Anna's, and was fortunate to spend a few days with her at her house and the famous Mountain Home Studio in Kentfield, CA in October 2016. Anna shared an improvised dance piece with me, at age 96!
