Gabrielle Roth was an author, theatre director, philosopher, recording artist, and dancer. She created the 5Rhythms® approach to movement, which is taught worldwide. Her work also influenced many other teachers and forms in the conscious and ecstatic dance fields.

Gabrielle arrived at Esalen Institute in the mid-Sixties and was invited by Fritz Perls to teach movement to his Gestalt Therapy groups. After meeting her husband Robert Ansell (1939-2022), they moved to New York City, where she set up an experimental theatre company and together with Robert released more than 20 music albums. Gabrielle is the author of 3 books, and she trained hundreds of teachers through "The Moving Center".

I never had a chance to dance with Gabrielle herself, but I studied with many teachers who trained with her. In April of 2020, I did an online interview with Robert Ansell in his home in New York City. For the 10th anniversary of Gabrielle’s passing in October 2022, I put together the tribute “… and then I met Gabrielle...”, a collection of memories by 25 movement leaders, family members and friends.
